Antônio Carlos Gomes (1836-1896) has sometimes been called the ‘Brazilian Verdi’. Not without reason: not only his music, but also his strongly nationalistic themes are strongly reminiscent of his Italian colleague.

I am a great lover of his operas and I don’t think I am the  only one. I am therefore very surprised that his operas do not enjoy the fame they deserve. While he was very successful during his lifetime, nowadays he is pretty much completely forgotten, although his operas dó still get performed here and there.

Plácido Domingo has always been the greatest champion of Gomes’ music and it is only thanks to him that Il Guarany was performed in Bonn in 1994 and recorded live by Sony (66273).

Admittedly, the libretto is occasionally a bit ridiculous. Just imagine two rival Indian tribes, both fighting Portuguese nobles, Spanish adventurers and each other. Cannibals also pass by, gold mines are robbed and castles set on fire, and in between, a beautiful white woman runs off with the Indian chief, but first, of course, he has to be baptised. It is impossible to recreate, but the music is so divine!

Domingo sings Pery, the Guarany chief with a tremendous sense of style that automatically makes you sit up and listen. A dragon of a role, but he makes it believable.



I have never been a great admirer of Verónica Villaroel (Cecilia) and here too she sounds a bit pinched. Carlos Álvarez, on the other hand, is very good as Gonzales and the rest of the cast is also fine.

Colombo


The Italian company Bongiovanni (GB 2429-2) released Gomes’ Colombo in 2008. The ‘Brazilian Verdi’ composed the work, a four-part cantata, to mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America.
Colombo is a very surprising work. The music is so evocative that even without the libretto – enclosed in a very informative textbook – you can imagine exactly what the story is about.






The work was recorded live at Teatro Massimo in Catania in May 2006, starring the highly charismatic baritone Alexandru Agache.

Antônio Carlos Gomes (1836-1896) wordt wel eens de ‘Braziliaanse Verdi’ genoemd. Niet zonder reden: niet alleen zijn muziek, maar ook zijn sterk nationalistisch gekleurde thema’s doen sterk aan zijn Italiaanse collega denken.

Ik ben een groot liefhebber van de opera’s van Gomes en ik denk niet dat ik alleen ben. Het verbaast mij dan ook zeer dat zijn opera’s niet de bekendheid genieten die ze verdienen. Tijdens zijn leven was hij zeer succesvol, tegenwoordig is hij zowat helemaal vergeten, al worden zijn opera’s nog her en der opgevoerd.

Plácido Domingo is altijd de grootste voorvechter van de muziek van Gomes geweest en het is alleen aan hem te danken dat Il Guarany in 1994 in Bonn uitgevoerd en live door Sony (66273) werd opgenomen.

Toegegeven, het libretto is af en toe lachwekkend. Stel je maar twee rivaliserende Indianenstammen voor,  die zowel met de Portugese edelen, Spaanse avonturiers en met elkaar vechten. Er komen ook kannibalen voorbij, er worden goudmijnen beroofd en kastelen in de fik gestoken en tussendoor gaat een mooie blanke met de Indianenhoofd ervandoor, maar eerst moet hij natuurlijk gedoopt worden. Het is niet na te vertellen, maar de muziek is zo goddelijk!

Gomes Placido

Domingo zingt Pery, de Guarany-Indiaan met een enorme gevoel van stijl, daar wordt je vanzelf stil van. Een draak van een rol, maar hij gelooft er in.

Ik ben nooit een grote bewonderaar van Verónica Villaroel (Cecilia) geweest en ook hier klinkt ze een beetje geknepen. Carlos Álvarez daarentegen is niet te versmaden als Gonzales en ook de rest van de cast is mooi.

Misschien ben ik een beetje bevooroordeeld (ik ben er bij geweest!), maar ik kan u allemaal de opname zeer aanbevelen.


COLOMBO

Gomes Colombo

Bij de Italiaanse firma Bongiovanni (GB 2429-2) is in 2008 Gomes’  Colombo uitgekomen. De ‘Braziliaanse Verdi’ componeerde het werk, een vierdelige cantate, ter gelegenheid van het vierhonderdste herdenkingsjaar van de ontdekking van Amerika.

Colombo is een zeer verrassend werk. De muziek is zo beeldend  dat je zelfs zonder het libretto  – bijgesloten in een zeer informatief tekstboekje-  je precies kunt voorstellen waar het verhaal over gaat.

Het werk werd in mei 2006 live opgenomen in Teatro Massimo in Catania, met in de hoofdrol de zeer charismatische bariton Alexandru Agache.
