Songs (and a bit more) of Nicolae Bretan




The chance that you have ever heard of Nicolae Bretan (1887 – 1968) is not very high. That’s not because of his music, because this Romanian composer/conductor/music critic and singer (he was trained as a baritone) produced many wonderful works. In 1944, Bretan wife’s family, who were Jewish, were transported to the Nazi extermination camp at Auschwitz and murdered.

After World War II, he worked for a short time as the director of the National Opera in Bucharest, but because he refused to join the Communist Party he was excluded from the composers’ union, which meant that his works were no longer allowed to be performed. The turning point came in the 1980s: a   was then established (partly through the initiative of his daughter), and the English firm Nimbus started recording his compositions at a steady pace.


I own three of his four operas: ‘Horia’ (NI 5513/4) and ‘Golem and Arald’ (NI 5424), which I have always enjoyed listening to, and I can heartily recommend them to any opera lover.


Some time ago Nimbus (NI 5810) released a CD with a selection of his songs (he composed more than 200!), beautifully sung by the baritone Alexandru Agache.

They remind me a bit of songs by Puccini, but with a Romanian-Hungarian sauce. Not really masterpieces, but very pleasant to listen to. Because of their wistfulness, they also exude a certain melancholy, and before you know it, they make you a little sad. Since Agache’s voice does not have too many color nuances, it can get a bit monotonous in the long run. So listen in moderation, I would say.

De kans dat u ooit van Nicolae Bretan (1887 – 1968) hebt gehoord is niet zo groot. Dat ligt niet aan zijn muziek, want deze Roemeense componist/zanger (hij werd opgeleid als een bariton) heeft heel wat prachtige werken gecomponeerd.

Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werkte hij een korte tijd als de directeur van de Nationale Opera in Boekarest maar omdat hij weigerde lid te worden van de Communistische Partij werd hij uitgesloten van de componistenbond, wat betekende dat zijn werken niet meer uitgevoerd mochten worden. De kentering kwam in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw: er werd toen (mede door het initiatief van zijn dochter) een Nicolae Bretan Muziekstichting opgericht, en de Engelse firma Nimbus nam gestaag zijn composities op.

Ik bezit drie van zijn vier opera’s: Horia (NI 5513/4), ‘Golem’ en ‘Arald’ (NI 5424), daar heb ik altijd met veel plezier naar geluisterd, en die kan ik iedere operaliefhebber van harte aanbevelen.

Een paar jaar geleden is bij Nimbus (NI 5810) een cd met selectie van zijn liederen (hij heeft er meer dan 200 gecomponeerd!) uitgekomen, mooi gezongen door de bariton Alexandru Agache. Ze doen me een beetje aan liederen van Puccini denken, maar dan wel met een Roemeens-Hongaars sausje. Niet echt meesterwerken, maar zeer prettig om naar te luisteren.

Door hun weemoed stralen ze ook een zekere melancholie uit, en voor je het weet word je er een beetje droevig van. Daar Agache niet over al te veel kleurnuancen beschikt, kan het op den duur een beetje eentonig worden. Doseren met mate, zou ik zeggen.
